Accepting the truth - software dev is changing quicker than I thought...and that is OK (I guess)

This post hits some hard truths - software is changing faster than even my pessimistic self expected.

I can either continue to be handcuffed by naive optimism that a skillset I have crafted as a hoppy (and obsession) hasn't fully been automated away (aka deer in the headlights), or I can dive fully into this drastic sea of change. Fortunately, I do have high agency and my incredible partner gives me enough space that even with a young child, I still have time to build. I just need 3 things:

  1. more confidence in my own ideas
  2. build my brand (related to point 1)
  3. change how I operate to build fully AI native, end-to-end

Here is what this post has highlighted for me:

  • I need to change my coding choices to prefer strongly typed languages and focus on detailed and robust tests. This also means learning cursor better and possibly spending more money on APIs and tools (sigh)
  • Don't plan for a tonne of rest this year (or two). Now is the time to bury down...but this may come at a cost if we're not careful (burnout and mental fatigue)
  • Need to think bigger and bolder about AI in the development cycle - meaning trying to use tools that build, test, and deploy automatically. In other words, accept and get out of its way. Note this can include many AI tools (think "infinite" to get your head in the right space), from developing to deploying/testing, to marketing and research - a full army of AIs.

A good way to practice is to start a small project being fully AI-native, where the sole goal is to build and ship something that someone else uses, with as few keystrokes from me as possible.

In summary, see this post as a stake for the point where I moved into the "acceptance" phase of grief. Its probably better to be here anyway.

As a positive (albeit slightly stressful) way to end:

If you’re a high agency person, there’s never been a better time to be alive...
